Why can't it ever be SIMPLE?!?!?
Sep. 18th, 2009 07:50 amFirst of all, for all you Anime Nerds... http://www.akicon.org/ is in Everett and you may want to consider attending.
So I'm checking all of my Nerdy Links this morning and i discover that over night Steve Miner has announced a November 8th Seattle Center ComiCard Convention. Steve's show is the longest running comic book convention in all of Washington State. His was my very first comic book convention, his was the first convention i ever sold stuff at, his convention feels like *home*.
His convention is SMALL. And considering that he has ZERO GUESTS confirmed, I'm going to assume that this is going to be a one-room Comic Book Swap Meet. Just like the last umpteen shows he has hosted at the Seattle Center. My guess is that he'll get Randy Emberlin and Mike Grell to show up, maybe Paul Chadwick... and that's it. The same 15-20 Seattle Area dealers all in one room, a table full of free posters and promotional fliers, and about 200 potential customers coming in through the doors over the course of the day.
HOWEVER! This is about what I expect from the Bellingham Convention as well. The only difference between Bellingham and Seattle is that up in Bellingham I'll be reaching 200 people who have never seen my stuff before; in Seattle, they all have seen it. And I've only got enough stuff left to do one GOOD show.
SO! I could still do the Portland Show on November 15... further away, costs way too much to do, extremely inconvenient for my own personal schedule BUT potentially up to 2,000 customers who have never seen my stuff.
OR! I could do the Bellingham Show on October 24... still pretty far away, moderate cost, mildly inconvenient for my own personal schedule BUT potentially up to 500 customers who have never seen my stuff.
OR! I could do the Seattle Show on November 8... half-hour away, cheap as dirt, about as inconvenient as microwave popcorn BUT only about 200 customers who have all seen my stuff over and over again.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmm...
What I'll *probably* do (and this is dependent upon folks going along with this)...
Do the Bellingham show on 10/24. Try to sell as much of my stuff as possible, make connections, have fun.
Help Steven Fitch sell HIS stuff at the Seattle Show, any of my leftovers. No one has ever seen his stuff, and it's a great way to get him started.
Forget the Portland Show unless they come up with some HUGE name like Jim Lee, Alex Ross, Todd McFarlane, William Shatner... *IF* someone huge ends up on the guest list, then we pack up Steve's stuff and hit the road.
