Looking through my "Vintage" book collection tonight, I found a great 1960's book titled "How To Improve Your Bowling". It's fairly awesome, with page after page of pictures featuring crew-cut skinny guys in white shirts and black ties bowling. It all pretty much boils down to pick a ball - throw the ball at the pins - try to knock the pins down.

I went ahead and checked the title page, looking for the exact year that this beauty was published, and was shocked to find:
First Printing August 1963
REVISED 1965

Revised? what startling, game-changing developments occurred in those two years that required - nay, DEMANDED - a Revised Edition be printed? How many bowling-related deaths had to happen before somebody said "OH CRAP! STOP THE PRESSES! My GAWD what have we done? I... I can't even... Okay. I know what needs to be done now. We... we just need to scrap this, revise it, print a whole new edition."

Was it some time between 1963 and 1965 that they added the Third Hole to the standard Bowling Ball (aka "The Devil's Hole")? Maybe this is when they stopped using live sleeping chickens and started using the wooden bowling pin instead? WHAT HAPPENED THAT MADE THEM NEED TO REVISE THIS BOOK?!?!?

Sure, I could Google it... but I prefer to leave it as one of life's great mysteries :)
