Memory Pig
Mar. 10th, 2012 09:41 amLast night I did the unthinkable. Last night, ON PURPOSE, I downloaded/installed/played DC Universe Online. This is the first time I have purposefully and wantonly downloaded and successfully played* a Memory Pig (MMORPG) since 1999 when friends convinced my to shell out $40 for EVERQUEST.
OH MY GOODNESS how I hated Everquest! Hate, hate, HATE! But my room mates loved it and so I played. I could never get the hang of chatting while doing stuff in the game and so I just gave up. Meanwhile, I saw my room mate's lives disintegrate directly because of that game. They started out as a young married couple with promising futures and jobs. But then they would start calling in sick to work so they could play. The husband fell in love with a few different folks in his guild, and the wife did the same. While she continued to go to work and succeed, he eventually lost his job and his wife to that game. It was very sad :(
Which is why I pretty much avoid Memory Pigs like the plague, in sort of the same way I avoid Booze because of all the lives I've seen destroyed by alcoholism.
When the "Champions" game went Free-To-Play a while ago, I was tempted to give it a try but watched some game-play videos and saw that it was just another "Click here, go here, talk to this person, go get this thing, come back to this person for reward" game so I passed.
But DC Universe Online got all sorts of awesome reviews. Everybody was saying that this game was so very different! Instead of churning through mundane experiences in order to Level Up, I'd be fighting side-by-side with my favorite DC Universe heroes! Once it went Free-To-Play, I knew I had to give it a try...
*(Noteable failed flirtations with Memory Pigs included a one-week free trial of "City Of Heroes" which was exactly like Everquest only with super heroes, and the DUngeons & Dragons MMORPG which I promised to try for a buddy who worked at Wizards of The Coast and then gave up on after only 15 minutes of playing)
