Inspired to action

The Folks at HornyOyster.com (despite the name it IS work-safe) have inspired me to post the Top 5 TV Sit-Com Intros of All Time.
They did a fairly good job of it, but they only did 80's action shows.
Comin in at NUMBER 5 is The Brady Bunch. Not only is this one of the most universally known theme songs and opening credit sequences of all time, but it effectively tells you EVERYTHING you need to know about the show before you even hear one line of dialogue. Very few TV intros can do wthat. After you see these opening credits you know "Oh! There's a guy and a lady, each one had kids, they got married and they have a maid! Let the hillarity ensue!" And by contrast, after you've seen the intro for "Friends" all you know is that it's gona be a show about people who like to dance in fountains.

NUMBER 4 is The Muppet Show. You may not catch on at first, but through the intro you discover that this is some sort of vaudeville show in an actual THEATER, being performed by a bunch of monsters, chickens, frogs and pigs. And the true MAGIC of this intro is that you completely accept that by the time Gonzo blows his horn at the end!

And that brings us to NUMBER 3, M*A*S*H. No words, just actions. Arial views of a chopper landing and the unconventionally dressed medicsrushing in to save lives, juxtaposed with a mellow/happy/folksy guitar theme. Truly classic.

The second-best Sit-Com intro (NUMBER 2) is The Drew Carrey Show. During a time when shows were using very minimalist openings, Drew went the exact opposite direction; he did a full-fledged production number incorporating the entire city of Cleveland in to his opening, making it really stand out against the bleak "Here's some pictures of the cast and some nonsensical popping and clanking sounds" of all the others.

But the absolute NUMBER 1 Sit-Com Intro of ALL TIME is of course Gilligan's Island, for all the reasons that all the other ones on this list were great. It's infinitely singable by everyone you know, it tells you everything you need to know before watching an episode, it leads you to accept a somewhat strange concept, it juxtaposes a violent storm and action sequences with a happy sea-chanty tune, and it's a great big production that was completely different from anything else currently on the air!

Go ahead and feel free to post your own thoughts or tell me how terribly wrong I am... I can take it :)
Next time? TOP 5 SCI-FI TELEVISION INTROS.

Date: 2006-07-27 07:27 pm (UTC)Hulk and GAH are indeed sci-fi. Pufnstuff, Sigmund at Land of The Lost are all "Live-Action Kids Shows", which is a special sub-category of Cartoons.
I've GOT all the rules, they're just in my head :)
