Firefox is suddenly just... not there any more.

Like, I click on Firefox, the computer whirs a bit, then... nothing.

It shows up under "Processes", but not under "Applications" in the task manager.

Tried re-installing it, no luck.

Tried uninstalling it and then re-installing it, no luck.

Anybody have any advice? I'd hate to be stuck with IE again!!!

Did you try rebooting? ;)

How completely did you uninstall? Did you just run the uninstaller and then install again or did you go through your hard drive and try to make sure you got rid of anything related? Did you get rid of all temp and cache files? I'd clean out EVERYTHING, restart, run a virus checker, run an adware checker, restart, then download and reinstall.

Do a repair on window or a system restore perhaps. I would also recommend running some scans like trend micro house call or panda to check for bugs.

Good idea... trying the System Restore next.

Funny how just a few months off of "The Front Lines" and I become a blithering idiot consumer who can't think of obvious solutions :)

Didn't work :(

Good thing I'm thinking of starting from scratch!

Not panda. Panda is the devil in disguise.

I've never used Panda before but others have told me it worked. Why no to Panda? Thanks for the heads up though.

Panda is one of the most problematic programs to remove from a system, it digs itself into everything.

you could try portable firefox as a temporary setup.

Uninstalling and reinstalling should probably work, but like a previous poster mentioned, you need to get it all. In addition to manually clearing out the folders if any are left behind, it also means ripping stuff out of the registry. You can start by whacking these after your uninstall is done:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mozilla
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MozillaPlugins
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Mozilla
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MozillaPlugins

There will still be a bunch of reg keys left that control stuff like what app opens up when you click on a hyperlink, open an HTML file locally, etc. Switching to IE as your default browser will help clear out a bunch of them too.

If you do all this (including clearing out your Firefox user directory and all plugins, whacking stuff in the registry, etc.) and it still doesn't work, try installing a downlevel (older) version of Firefox and then upgrading it.

Does it appear in the application bar across the bottom (and just not on the screen)?

Did you recently install some plugin that borked it? Or an upgrade? If so, after uninstalling, wipe out the folder (and possibly the registry entries).

Do you have too many tabs open so that resuming a session fails?

Not in the app bar :(

Installed a MyPoints Search Bar so I could get points... that seems to have done it.

Unfortunately, I decided to just go ahead and use my Compaq Recovery Disks, reformat and start from scratch. Only time will tell if this was a wise decision...

Gimmie an F!

Gimmie an F!

Gimmie an R!

What does that spell?

FFR!!!

Yeah, that's what I'm in the middle of right now :(

It's okay if several files off the recovery disk say "File was unagle to be recovered!", right? Computers don't need *that many* files, do they?
From: [identity profile] captain-slinky.livejournal.com
The disk was just dirty. So embarrassed. But now it's all good :)

Did you power cycle your linkskies rooter and contact your network administrator due to all your firmware in the DNS cache after repairing your internal command shortcuts?

Oh well then you must have all ready rebuilt your tpc/itp protcolectors in the ramjet. Strange that should have fixed it. It's got to be the flux capacitors then. It's the only thing left. Do have a spare one?
