Wil Wheaton announces that he'll be guest-starring on an episode of "The Big Bang Theory" this season.

This just kinda pisses me off because it was two years ago at ECCC that Wil put his finge on what I couldn't quite grasp about that show what was bugging me. He said that he didn't care for it because there was this feeling... this *theme* to the show that was a "We're not laughing WITH you, we're laughing AT you" thing that came off as kind of insulting to us Nerds.

And when he said that, I was all "OMG THAT'S IT YOU HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD WIL WHEATON!!!"

The entire first season of the Big Bang Theory was all about "You silly Nerds! Don't you understand that you're NERDS, and will NEVER get the pretty girl? These are the reasons you will never get a girl!", and it was kind of insulting. Like if they made a show about black people and it was al about eating fried chicken and watermelon, listening to Jazz and tap-dancing... bu tone of the main characters was really in to a white girl who moved in next door. "Silly Negro! You can't get a White Woman! Look at how different your lives are! She doesn't even LIKE Grape Kool-Aid and Malt Liquor!"

THAT'S insulting. But when it was comic books, sci-fi and on-line gaming it became perfectly acceptable. And THAT was just... awkward for me.

But then my Nieces forced me to keep watching the new season, and by golly it got BETTER. I mean, A LOT BETTER. Instead of being about how Nerds will never get a pretty girl, it became about how some people just aren't right for each other. It became about quirky characters instead of socially awkward hobbies. It became a funny show about funny people instead of an insensitive mockery of everything I love! HOORAY!

And now it MUST be okay, because the guy who first made me loathe the show will now be playing a roll on it :) Wil was even wearing a "Rock Paper Scissor Lizard Spock" T-Shirt at PAX last weekend!

Yeah, this surprises me too. I was at that panel where he got asked about BBT at ECCC. Now this. Although it IS true, that show has gotten better since it first started, and they aren't laughing AT nerds so much anymore. I will have to be sure to record it when the ep comes out.

I'll be watching the entire season already anywho... that second season hooked me, and there's a real lack of half-hour shows to watch any more!

I've only ever seen a couple of episodes, but I found it distasteful for just that reason.

You must have missed the interview someone did where it said explicitly that Penny was going to hook up with one of the guys (Leonard, I think) eventually.

Oh, I read that... and that's part of why it's okay. Life is full of regrettable hook-ups, regardless of if you're a Nerd or not :)

I noticed this when I had to watch season 1 of Buffy for a college "Depictions of Women" class...

There seems to be this thing where the first season of most great shows have to feel out their audience as well as their bosses, see what they can get away with without getting cancelled.

Then, 2nd season, they've been renewed & they go crazy having a GREAT time pushing whatever their previously defined envelope was, making in-jokes because hey, they're a cult hit! (or something like that.) And they get away with it because, well, its not their first season anymore & they don't have to live in quite as much fear of not getting renewed....

Wil has been showing up as a guest star on a number of shows this year. Maybe he had a lot of bills to pay. Principles are all fine and good, but they don't tend to hold up in the face of monetary need.
