    Bellingham Convention Cons
  • Smaller convention = Less Customers
  • Convention being put on by somebody completely different this year
  • Different location than last year; not anywhere near The Mall which I thnk brought most of the customers last year
  • Not much in the way of celebrity guests yet

  • Close enough to the border that Canadian Currency may become an issue
      Portland Concention Cons
    • Three hours away is awfully far to drive with an open truck full of paper goods in Washington State in November
    • Unfamiliar with the venue
    • Tables are more expensive
    • On a Sunday, which would mean not getting home till late Sunday night.
    • Would have to take two vehicles, I think...
    • Not much in the way of guests yet

Bellingham doesn't sound particularly exciting. If I had to pick one to attend, it would be Portland. (The only reason I'd go to Bellingham is if they had Wil-freakin-Wheaton or something. No, probably just for Wil.) You'll definitely have more potential customers at Portland.

Why would it be two vehicles for Portland and not for Bellingham?

Bellingham we have the half-way point of my parents house for a pit-stop in case of emergency, but if we break down on the way to Portland all we've got is our reliance on AAA, so I'd want a back-up vehicle in case anything went horrifically wrong.

And regarding the "Excitement" factor; neither one of the shows has anyone that mind-blowing as a guest. Now, if The Bellingham Convention Guy takes his cue from the previous organizrs? There will also be panels on Independent Film Making and Indie Rock Concerts all day long :) But even as it is right now, I'd choose Bellingham over Portland just because it's closer.

I'd go Portland for many reasons... None of which being the fact that my inlaws live in B'ham.

People in Portland have more money than they do up here. At least that's been my experience. And with the economy the way it has been, surrounding yourself with people who actually have some disposable income is a plus.

It sounds like the Portland show knows more of what they are doing. Experience is never a bad thing.

The guest list can always improve. That being said, perhaps you want to wait as long as you feel comfy with before making any final decisions. Could you possibly sign up for both, then cancel the one that isn't up to your impecible standards as the date approaches?

Put aside the worry about a second car. I'm sure we could easily be persuaded to assist if necessary... and we have a van and access to a trailer if needed.

Closer schmoser.... live a little! Venture away from home. It's good for you :)

All true, and thank you for the offer of the help and the wahtnot!

However, the Portland Show *REALLY* cuts in to our profits in several ways, the least of which being twice as much gas to get there. Then there's accommodations, food and the obligatory stop over at Powells Book Store! Oh, and since the Portland show is on a *Sunday*, Crystal would end up either (a) going to work on Monday morning with less than a few hours of sleep or (b) missing work on Sunday entirely.

Going to Bellingham, we've got it made. Half the cost of gas, stay at my Parents place just 45-minutes from the convention, and no super-awesome book store to tempt me in to buying stuff with my profits!

SO! If we figure $20 for the extra gas, $85 for a cheap-ass hotel room and I'll go VERY conservative saying that I could get out of Powells spending just $20... add in the $90 for a table at the convention... we're talking about $215 in the hole before I even sell a single Dalek! And considering that I think I'm only going to come away from this convention with maybe $300... Portland just looks less and less appealing every minute :(

So unless they suddenly get some HUGE NAME to show up at their con, it's gonna be Bellingham all the way!
