Has anybody heard ofa Dungens & Dragons style game that actively pits the Dungeon Master against the player? I mean, y'know, other than EVERY RPG ON THE MARKET (Bazinga)?

Ideas for a fast-paced D&D Parody Game started falling out of my head and on to paper yesterday, and it's such a good idea that I can't believe it hasn't already been done. I want to check first, make sure it hasn't already been done... nothing I hate more than spending a mnth writing something only to hear "Oh that's just like the game Crazy Eights"!

Working title is "THE DM IS TRYING TO KILL YOU!"

It's a Board Game along the lines of "Zombies" in that the board is never the same twice, being drawn at random. Game for 2 to 6 players. One player is "The Dungeon Master", the rest of the players are "Gamers". Object of the game is to loot the dungeon and vanquish the evil before the DM kills all your characters. The "Gamers" start the game with a deck of 52 bb"Adventurers" to plow through. If the DM manages to kill all 52 Adventurers, he wins! If The Gamers make it through the Dungeon and kill The Big Boss, then whoever's current character has the most treasure is the winner.

Gonna try playing a test-version with the girls during Geek Camp, see how it ends up...

"Orcs at the Gates" or "Descent" are both this theme in a boardgame format.

Thank you! Must check them out to see if my game is too similar or not...

Sure thing. "Orcs at the Gates" is funny, it's the Knights of the Dinner Table vs BA. "Descent" isn't so silly but it is still fun. The scenarios aren't balanced all that well but what the heck.

My game has no scenarios, which I think is what really puts it apart from the other games out there. Completely random dungeons being generated turn by turn, each room and passageway stocked with monsters and treasures one at a time by the DM.

WOO HOO! Neither of those games is like what I'm brewing up! If anything, it seems to be a hybrid between the two with a third component thrown in to set it apart from the herd. Excellent...

Other than the ones mentioned I'm sure there are others, but who cares? Half the RPGs out there have rehashed themes from other games. Write what you want, don't copy someone else's rules exactly and have fun with it. I'd love to see it when it is ready for play.

You might check if the phrase "Dungeon Master" is copyrighted though. I don't know if it is, but given its use by so many companies and in so many different media types an ounce of protection never hurts.
