Our first catr, Huffelpuff Van Whiskersface ("Huffy" for short) is dieing :(

Over the last two weeks he hasn't been eating much at all and barely ever drinking. His belly goes concave when he tries to purr and it sound like a death rattle. He's normally VERY energetic but for the last two weeks he's been lethargic to the point where even other cats say "Dude, don't you want to get up and do something?" We took him to the vet.

Vet said a great long list of things that could be wrong, suggested about $1k worth of tests, we declined. We instead had them test for the BIG ones (Feline HIV, Feline Lukemia, etc) and had them give him a shot of antibiotics. They said we should take him home and try to get him to drink 250 ML of water a day, see if he perks up. If there's no improvement within a few days (and there hasn't been), then it's most likely something entirely untreatable :(

We're only able to get him to drink maybe 50 to 100 ML a day so far, but at least he's eating a little bit now. But he's not really showing any signs of getting better beyond that :(

My feeling is that as long as he's not in pain, I'd rather just let him stay here at home where he is happy and safe and can pass away in his sleep rather than put him through a thousand dollars worth of tests that will end with them having to euthenize him anyways.

I think I want him to go that way because that's how *I* want to go... as long as there's no pain or minimum pain, just let me go. If there *is* pain, do what you can to make me comfortable so I can go in peace. That's really all I can ask for, isn't it?

Your plan is the way to go. It's far kinder to Huffy to be in familiar surroundings with his family.
