I think I've finally been able to put my finger on what I dislike about modern comics.

Before the hypothesis, though, here are the numbers:

1985 DC Comics Star Trek Annual #1. Cover price: $1.25. Price I paid: $1. Enjoyment (on a scale of 1 to 10): 8. Time it took me to finish reading the comic: 1 hour.

2009 IDW Comics Angel "The Curse" Trade Paperback. Cover price: $19.99. Price I paid: $1. Enjoyment (on a scale of 1 to 10): 8. Time it took me to finish reading the comic: 15 minutes.

It all boils down to how long I'm involved in the whole reading process. The Star Trek Annual gave me much more bang for my buck, end even though I only paid $1 for the Angel TPB? The entire time I was reading ti I was thinking "Man I would have been pissed if I had paid full cover price for this book, or even the $4 per issue they wanted for the mini-series"!

The comics today seen to concentrate more on style than substance. I remember 'God Loves, Man Kills' vividly, and that was 25 years ago. It was the story, not the art, that was so vivid.

Can't really bring to mind any storyline of the last 5-10 years that stuck with me. Now, the art is great, but the writing...not so much.
