30th Birthday Rambling
May. 8th, 2003 10:56 amDon't mind this post... just the random ramblings of an old man.
Today I turn 30. This is the point of no turning back. The person you are when you turn 30 is the person you're pretty much going to be for the rest of your life. Any ambitions you had to become an Astronaut, Laywer, Doctor, Director, Actor, etc. have pretty much passed, and what you are doing now is what you will be for the rest of your life (baring the interference of a big inheritance and/or winning the lottery).
So who am I?
I'm unemployed. I collect comic books. I sell stuff on Ebay to make aliving. I look like The Comic Book Guy from "The Simpsons", and act more like him than I care to admit.
Yeah, I'm *that* guy. The guy in line to see X-2 wearing a too-tight Spiderman T-shirt and a torn up jeans-jacket with Captain America on the back. I'm the guy who complains about how the kids today don't have GOOD cartoons/comic books/toys/cereal like we did when *I* was a kid. In a nutshell, I'm the guy I always pittied whenever I came in to the comic book store.
And I'm torn on how I actually feel about that.
On the one hand, it hurts to know that the majority of society will look at me as someone who is pathetic and has wasted his life in fantasy. Other people studied, got good jobs, had families, traveled to far off lands, and had a "Life" in general. Me, I have 20-something long-boxes full of bagged-and-boarded wasted youth sitting in a storage unit.
But then I look at it this way; what would I have done with a "life"? Most people with "A Life" love to travel. "Ooh, I want to see Spain! I want to see Rome! I want to see THE WORLD!" But not me. I've never cared to see other parts of the world. The only reason to travel, as far as I'm concerned, is to go to a good Comic Book Convention!
So I'm ready to accept this role in society that I've been destined to play. It's the one that suits me!

Date: 2003-05-08 11:20 am (UTC)I'd invite you out for a celebratory beer, but unfortunately I must spend the few hours I'll have between work and bedtime packing. Maybe sometime after I get back.
