109 - Nerd Homecoming
May. 2nd, 2015 08:18 pmToday is Free Comic Book Day, where you can go to pretty much any Comic Book Specialty Store (use the link to find your local participating comic book shop) and get yourself some free, brand-new, specially-made-for-today Comic Books. It's like a holiday! Some shops limit you to just two or three, others say go ahead and take as many as you like, the majority of shops take advantage of this event to have some sort of really awesome sales. It's one of my favorite Holidays :)
If ComiCon is "Nerd Prom", then Free Comic Book Day is Nerd Homecoming. This year I am using the day to go visit my old stomping grounds, Subspace Comics in Lynnwood (Formerly The Comic Stop flagship store, no idea what happened there). Back when it was The Comic Stop, that store saved me from giving up on comics altogether!
One of the things I absolutely *love* about this location is that whenever I go in there - even if it's been more than a YEAR since I was last there - the owners recognize me and greet me warmly :) Getting to chat with Bryan for a bit was a real highlight of the day, and I'm always amazed by how they come seeking *me* and calling me by name rather than me having to say "Hey, remember me?"
I felt so warm and fuzzy, I started thinking about getting back in to Monthly Comics... maybe a nice little subscription box, ya know? Bryan has NEVER steered me wrong, having personally suggested most of the titles that I have enjoyed since the "fall" of Main Stream Comics*.
So here I am making a little list - most shops require you to have t least ten titles on your pull list in order to get a box. WHat would I get?

- Afterlife With Archie
- Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
- 2000AD
- Any of the new Red Circle comics coming from Archie Comics - Bryan suggested them as being an incredible new take on the characters and Mark Waid is involved so HOORAY!
- Hulk & The Agents Of S.M.A.S.H. (or whatever marvel "All Ages" book involves them in their rotation, for Molly who is in love with Hulk right now)
- Rik & Morty (picked up the first issue at ComiCon, it is a hoot)
- I think Darkhorse is currently publishing a relaunch of "Creepy" magazine, a horror anthology?
- Uhmmmmmmm...?>/ul>
What else should I put on there? I'm not such a fan of "New" comics so I've been out of it far too long to care any more. I like "Classic" stuff. Maybe whatever New DC stuff Keith Giffen is working on?
*("The Fall Of Mainstream COmics", in my opinion, was right around the conclusion of the whole "Infinite Crisis" thing at DC comics and "Civil War" at Marvel)
