Yesterday was our traditional Pathfinder Fourth Of July BBQ at The Cory's House. We killed some Owlbears, found a pool of undead and an aetherial sewer of air currents. The Goins Clan was nice enough to have brought a bunch of low-carb snackiness for me since they knew I was trying to low-carb, I was so thankful :)

Then the children set stuff on fire and caused explosions. I spent a good chunk of the evening inside, trying to comfort the poor dogs. It was a good night :)

I cleared out a good 70% of my DVD collection today and sold it to Half Price Books, everything that wasn't Disney, Super Hero or Bootleg (or the three Evil Dead films). Figure i got an average of 50-cents per DVD.

PESSIMISTS WILL SAY: You got robbed! FIFTY CENTS PER DVD?!?!? You paid up to THIRTY DOLLARS EACH for those things new! How could you let them take advantage of you like that! You could have at least put them on Craigslist or Ebay and gotten a ton more money!

OPTIMISTS WILL SAY: That's awesome! You cleared out a bunch of stuff you never ever watch AND made money! You didn't waste a lot of time on trying to get the biggest bucks, meaning your tim is worth more than the potential money you could have made - IF you could make any more money in the first place! I mean c'mon, let's be realistic... when was the last time you heard of somebody buying a used copy of The Muppets Take Manhattan or Shrek II off of Ebay for big bucks?

I'm an optimist :)

So now what am I going to do with this additional two feet of space on my book shelf? Hmmmmmmm...

I *thought* I was treating myself to a delicious, carbohydrate-and-calorie-free Slurpee today. After all, the sign on the Slurpee Machine SAYS "Sugar Free", and most sugar free liquids have zero carbs and zero calories. Zero anything else, too... look at a can of Diet Coke's nutritional information and you'll see a string of zeroes. But then I read on the Slurpee.com website that there's actually TWENT CALORIES and EIGHT CARBS in every 8 ounces of this stuff! Oh, and DIETARY FIBER! FIVE GRAMS OF THE STUFF!!! WTF???

So I read the ingredients, and found the source of calories and the carbs and the fiber - DEXTRIN.

WTF IS DEXTRIN???

Well step right up, friends, and let me tell you all about the Miracle Product of The Century! The Product Sensation that's all the rage with the European aristocracy as well as the mysterious Pharos of the exotic, far-off Middle East! The Ancients of The Orient have kept this miracle product a secret for thousands of years, passed down from generation to generation through nothing more than spoken word! And now, friends, YOU TOO can own this Modern Marvel! Ladies and gentlemen! I present to you! THE EIGHTH WONDER OF THE WORLD... DEXTRIN!

It's a thickening and binding agent in pharmaceuticals and paper coatings! It's a crispness enhancer for food processing, in food batters, coatings, and glazes! It's a textile finishing and coating agent to increase weight and stiffness of textile fabrics! It's added to fireworks and sparklers, allowing them to solidify as pellets or "stars"! It's a printing thickener for batik resist dyeing! it's used in the foundry industry as green strength additives in sand casting! IT'S THE LICKABLE STICKY STUFF YOU FIND ON THE BACK OF YOUR STAMPS AND ON ENVELOPES!!!
