This is an all-points CAPTAIN SLINKY SLINK-ALERT S.O.S. BULLETIN going out across all channels to all active members of The Cool Kids Club, The Slinkadettes, The Slinkateers AND all members of The Captain Slinky "Corporal Slinky" Junior Auxilliary Corps!

Your Captain is in dire need of a way to copy rite-protected DVD. Nero will supposedly allow me to copy a DVD, but every DVD I put in there says "Unable to copy because this disk is rite protected".

Anybody able to reccomend a good program, or a hack or something that would allow me to make "back up" copies to loan out?

Nero will allow you to copy DVDs - just not write protected ones. The MPAA doesn't want you to be able to copy that stuf. So, generally, you'll need to use a decrypter, and then possibly a compressor (a lot of times they're too big for even a DVD-R, so you have to get it to size down), and *then* burn it to DVD. Depending on what you use, you may or may not get the DVD menus.

I can't name specific programs, since I don't do this; I don't have any experience with good ones; usually I'm just burning all the anime I've downloaded to DVD.

That's another thing I need... a program that'll burn the stuff to a DVD in DVD format instead of a VCD. Any suggestions there?

Sorry - what you're asking for is illegal under the DMCA. (And good lord, it's a felony!)

Everything I'm aware of that's consumer-grade software has been "cease-and-desist"-ed by the MPAA.

The writing to DVD part is easy. Nero or a zillion other tools will do that for you. It's the decrypting the original disc that is verboten.

Program to make backup copies? My ninja are searching as we speak.

Program to create vcd/dvd's from downloaded video files? Burning as we speak, one bundled copy of Cyberlink's PowerDirector 2.5ME (not sure what the ME means.)

See you at 5.

Try CloneDVD - you can get a time-bombed demo version of it or find a crack. There used to be a freeware utility called ClonyXXL that would scan a copy-protected CD and tell you what weird checkboxes of CloneCD to set, so it or another tool may exist for DVDs. The CloneCD/DVD products are made by elby (elaborate bytes): elby.de
