Why do I feel so much resentment towards Attack of the Clones? I think it's two-fold... first, sure, there's my limitless devotion to Comic Books and the Spiderman movie (STILL breaking records). But then there's also a bunch of stuff about George Lucas in general that just bugs me. He's got this entire nation of sheep that will blindly swallow anything that says "Star Wars" on it, and he uses his association with that good trillogy to push a bunch of crap on us. "Howard The Duck", "Willow", and "Radioland Murders" are just some of the crap he's unloaded on us over the years while we waited patiently for a new Indiana Jones or Luke Skywalker. It's almost like the "Star Wars George" and the "Willow George" are two different people... one who makes *good* movies, and one that wants to see the world eat cream puffs filled with dog poop.

So anyway, now we FINALLY get new Star Wars movies... and what do we get? It looks like "Willow George" killed "Star Wars George" and took his place! "Now, with Star Wars George out of the way, I can make Star Wars the way it *should* be... with lots of wacky characters and pop-culture references! Woot!"

I just don't like it any more :(

For reference, I have never seen Howard the Duck OR Radioland Murders. Heck, I've never heard of it. And this little girl was watching Willow at the age of 4. Before she'd ever heard of Star Wars.

I'm too out of pop-culture to catch any of the references... wooo... and for the love of God kick out the wacky characters.

I just don't like it any more :(
For story lines sake, I'm sticking around... I wanna know what happens, but as far as movie quality goes... They're never going to get back what they had in the originals... very sad, but true.

Haven't heard of Radioland Murders that is. I've heard of Howard the Duck.

I know, I know... I'm speaking from a slightly older, "Old enough to remember the original Star Wars in the theaters" point of view. For those of us who grew up on a movie simply titled "Star Wars" (not "A New Hope") and had to live through "The Star Wars Holiday Special" and "Ewoks: Battle For Endor", these mediocre "Prequels" are just the latest in a long line of dissapointments.

The whole George Lucas universe is like a great big peer-group, and there's always pressure to go see whatever is the latest and the greatest. I felt like I had no choice but to go see Phantom Menace, and I also feel like I have no choice but to go see The Clones. It was the same feeling with Radioland Murders and Willow. I guess that's where my resentment is.

I mean, Pahntom Menace, in and of itself, I enjoyed. It was good sci-fi. But because I felt forced to go see it, I ended up resenting it and looking for faults. I didn't like that feeling, and I don't want to feel it towards this new movie either.

It's like George Lucas just pumps it out, knowing that all us geeks will rush right out and see it even if it's a steaming pile of doo. And over half the geeks will defend the movie to the very end simply because the Father of Star Wars made it, so it *has* to be good!

Of course, it could just be a mood that I'm in right now... I just started my diet again, and I'm willing to admit that my actions have never been closer to those of a female quadrapedic canine than they are right now :)

Ha, I do remember the Ewok movies. I own them both. Oh man, it was funny cause I rewatched them recently and I was like "Wow. These didn't suck so bad when I was in Kindergarten!"

There are a *lot* of things that didn't suck quite so bad when I was in Kindergarden.

I, too, was one of those folks who stood on line in '77 (I was 12 at the time) to get in to see Star Wars. After Empire (any chance Kasdan can write Episode III?), my expectations were so high for every film, special, series, etc., that was in any way Star Wars related.

Needless to say, I've been disappointed far more than I've been satisfied. I mean, I even hated Mark Hamill's appearance on "The Muppet Show."

Expectations aside, I thought Phantom Menace was just an awful film that catered to small children. My son thought it was brilliant, of course (he was 7 when it came out). He loves the wacky characters and the simple plot. (Hmmm guess Lucas is a bit like the tobacco companies -- start 'em young before they know any better.)

Clones worked a little better for me -- that is, once you get rid of that silly Anakin/Padme stuff, which "Willow George" (heh heh, I like that) didn't pull off very well at all.

Hope you don't mind me adding you -- [livejournal.com profile] dotgirl said I had to or else her ninjas would find me and make me watch Howard the Duck again

Willow was just an excuse for George Lucas to fulfill all his leather-clad bondage-dwarf fantasies. If you listen carefully during the "making of" part of the DVD, in some of the scenes you can hear Geroge behind the camera going "UUUUUUNGH! *pant*, *pant*, Okay, that's a wrap! Print!"
