Confirm or Deny a rumor?
May. 22nd, 2007 05:47 pmRajn in to The Co-Werker Who Had Been Canned A Week Before Me today, found out why she had been "let go", and heard a somewhat disturbing rumor that I need some Comcastic person or another to either confirm or deny for me:
All the "New Hires" that they're bringing in are being hired at $8.50 an hour.
Certainly *sounds* like something our Bean-Counting buddies would hae cooked-up, doesn't it? And if this IS the case, then all you long-haul employees should REALLY watch your backs, because when you can be replaced for $4-an-hour LESS? Suddenly things like Personal E-Mail, Playing your DS, making Origami, sewing, wearing shorts and/or etc suddenly becomes an offense that can ONLY be dealt with by a swift and immediate termination of your employment.

You can go through all your LJ entries to find the fun stories you've written. That should get you a few dozen pages right there. Add in some more anectdotes, a few cartoons, and you have the makings of a book.
Oh and as bad as they are, Comcast is not the Evil Empire. Microsoft is. Wait till Microsoft aquires Comcast and then you can call it that. :D

Date: 2007-05-23 04:05 am (UTC)I thought they started Video employees a bit lower than the HSI folks, not sure what the base is any more, but considering that the training classes cost well over 50 thousand when you include all the wages and material to train a new group and there is an expected turn over ratio from each new class. I think the Fife repair did something crazy like a 50% turn over. So Comcast is very aware that it is cheaper to keep an employee than to hire one.
I thought the $8.50 was the starting point for sales and the cable stores, but they have a base + commission so they tend to make much more than the average call center repair employee. Sales also have a much higher turn over rate.
