Rajn in to The Co-Werker Who Had Been Canned A Week Before Me today, found out why she had been "let go", and heard a somewhat disturbing rumor that I need some Comcastic person or another to either confirm or deny for me:

All the "New Hires" that they're bringing in are being hired at $8.50 an hour.

Certainly *sounds* like something our Bean-Counting buddies would hae cooked-up, doesn't it? And if this IS the case, then all you long-haul employees should REALLY watch your backs, because when you can be replaced for $4-an-hour LESS? Suddenly things like Personal E-Mail, Playing your DS, making Origami, sewing, wearing shorts and/or etc suddenly becomes an offense that can ONLY be dealt with by a swift and immediate termination of your employment.

Damn that Sucks! but I wouldn't doubt it, sadly. It'll cost craptastic in the long run... Cheap customer service = little customer satisfaction. The only thing that they have to argue against that is who will they pick other than us?

Eek.

I'll have to check on that.

I really don't want to have to 1) wear shoes or 2) work for Verizon.

fyi: I know a number of people who have quit or been asked to leave, and looked for other means of employment. I once out of curiousity checked a few things out myself. As I have found, many places really like your previous place. Power, phone, cell, other tv, almost any utility, and some similar, such as internet, earthlink, or even msn or something look favorably on you. I actually had a place in toronto calling me and asking me to work tv there and they would pay my moving costs and help me find habitation. that was pretty cool to feel that wanted. most of the people i know who had to seek elsewhere and chose tv usually got a management or better position too. of course, most of the ones who left voluntarily came back within a year, due to culture or benefits usually. i also believe you may still be able to come back after so much time. i know one person who was fired and rehired about 5 times in a row, they just had to wait like 3-6 months between times. oh, and if you are at all interested in working overseas, they pay enormous sums for what you do. i know a couple people who went to 80,000 per year by going to iraq/israel/or other similar places.

I still think you should write up all your fun call stories there and have them published. Even if you changed the name of the company I think you could have a hit. It would serve them right for you to make money off them.

I think I'll call don't think so on that, until you can confirm it.
I thought they started Video employees a bit lower than the HSI folks, not sure what the base is any more, but considering that the training classes cost well over 50 thousand when you include all the wages and material to train a new group and there is an expected turn over ratio from each new class. I think the Fife repair did something crazy like a 50% turn over. So Comcast is very aware that it is cheaper to keep an employee than to hire one.
I thought the $8.50 was the starting point for sales and the cable stores, but they have a base + commission so they tend to make much more than the average call center repair employee. Sales also have a much higher turn over rate.

The $22+/hr sounds nice & all, but i've heard they're an awful company to work for... from people who have worked for them.

Now I just need to find time to DO it while being a stay-at-home Dady! How do you do it?

I get things done during naps, after bed time, and when Jill gets home to have baby time.

One thing about you not working there, your family can get used to a normal night time sleep schedule. That has to be a positive thing.

You can go through all your LJ entries to find the fun stories you've written. That should get you a few dozen pages right there. Add in some more anectdotes, a few cartoons, and you have the makings of a book.

Oh and as bad as they are, Comcast is not the Evil Empire. Microsoft is. Wait till Microsoft aquires Comcast and then you can call it that. :D

Nope, nothing. Just a "Oh, sorry, we're working on notifying everybody, feel free to keep applying on-line". So THAT'S a dead-end :(
