Woke up this morning to find that my connection between MY computer and [livejournal.com profile] khristle's computer is just GONE. We can oth still get on the internet, but can't access files on eachother's computers for some reason. Clicking on the "My Network Places" on her computer gives me a list of all the files over on my pc, but clicking on any file results in a "The Network Path Was Not Found". And over on MY computer, the My Network Places is completely *gone*.

Tried the Microsfot Netshell Command as suggested in the MSKB, no effec for either computer. Tried creating a new home network, an it all goes through just fine but doesn't actually create the network or anything.

Looks like I'll have to move the hard-drive physically over to her computer if i wanna burn anything today :(

Chris can probably help you troubleshoot it tonight if you need.

I just might need that. I've nearly exhausted all my technical know-how!

First check your firewall if your running one.

Don't just recreate the network but try going in under my network places through windows explorer and delete the folders shared in there. Once they are all gone right click on each folder you want to share and goto sharing and security and turn on the sharing for that folder again. Also check under your LAN properties to make sure file and printer sharing for Microsoft networks is turned on.

Make sure your router didn't go crazy by resetting it back to factory settings and check for any firmware updates for it.

Worst case scenario you could always try a system restore in the event that it is simply a bug or virus that caused everything to go haywire.

We've been havng issues with the router lately, had to powercycle it 5 times in one day last week! I'll try all that and let you know how it goes. Thanks!

Hey, are we all going to Jon's this weekend for The Spoils?

My Network Places caches connections--it will tease you by showing you shares that you can't currently see. So the fact it shows you anything doesn't mean your networking is working.

Since you can both get to the internet, the issue is probably either something blocking inbound connections on one of your computers (ala Windows Firewall) or a name resolution issue. It's easy to rule out the latter - get the IP address of each box (go to command prompt, do ipconfig /all) and ping the one from the other and the other from the one. If that works, go to each box and try to view the other computer by IP and not name (start - run - \\other.computer.ip.address). If that works, then you can see the other machine. If not, something is blocking the traffic - probably a firewall. If you are plugging straight to your router, you could try plugging into a dumb hub or switch to rule out the router doing something odd.

Lemme know if you want me to give you a call.

Thanks! i tried a bit of that stuff (pinging the computers from eachother) before hand, and they weren't seeing eachother. So on a lark I decided to go and update the router's firmware, reset the router and... now the computers see eachother but still no My Network. Then I did the old standby of a System Restore, rolled my PC back to the beginning of the month, and NOW the computers see eachother AND i have My Netowrk Places AND i can access files on either computer! Hooray! But some of the shared folders on MY pc are still not showing up on HER network Places for some reason. Gonna try removing it all and starting from scratch I think...

You can get to stuff without it being in My Network Places - it's just a container for shortcuts. On her computer, go to start, run, and enter "\\BLAH" in the box, where BLAH is your computer name. That should bring up your computer and show all the resources you're sharing and let you double click on them to open. You can also, at a command prompt, type "net view \\BLAH" to see the list.

Once you connect, it should in theory make a shortcut in My Network Places. You can also add them explicitly as shortcuts under My Network Places if you want them there.

Ah yes... SHOULD being the operative word here! As of right now the only part of my PC I'm still having trouble seeing from hers is my external USB hard drive.

However, the reason I need it to come up in the My Network Places is because that seems to be the only way to get Nero to see it! And as of ight now, for some reason the only file on my PC that nero is seeing is my My Documents/My Videos folder!

Still, it's better than nothing :D
