Geek Camp Review
Aug. 8th, 2007 12:10 pmI completely forgot to follow-up on Geek Camp!
Almost a month ago now, so some of this is a bit foggy...
The films reviewed during Geek Camp were The Princess Bride (Loved it), Labyrinth (Never would have chosen to watch it on her own, but loved it enough to say she would definitely watch it again), Mystery Science Theater 3000: I Accuse My Parents (the HIGHLIGHT of the week imho, because she loved it AND said "Okay, so what's so geeky about this?". DOING SOMETHING GEEKY AND NOT KNOWING THAT IT'S GEEKY IS THE ULTIMATE GEEKY!!!) and Hawk The Slayer.
And of course there were suplimental viewings of Jim Henson's The Storyteller, The Muppet Show, Justice League Unlimited and various vintage Disney properties.
We spent 2 days creating her Super Her/Super Villain "Trick Girl", complete with costume, utility belt and a back story explaining how Trick Girl is a modern day Robin Hood-type character, protecting the Younger Sisters and vanquishing the Older Sisters of The World.
I was unable to get hold of any episodes of Xena: Warior Princess, Hercules and/or other D&D-esque entertainments, so we made do with the vintage Jack Palance movie "Hawk The Slayer" as our introduction to the worlds of Fantasy the night before trying Dungeons & Dragons on the fnal night.
She LOVES D&D now and can hardly wait to play again. I made up a really simple version of D&D complete wih an extremely cliche'd adventure and NPCs to help guide her along. Her Halfling Warrior delighted in chopping-off a bad guy's leg during a bar room brawl :)
SO! Next year we're thinking of doing this with TWO or maybe even THREE little kids! Already planning the roster of events to be much like it was this year... we'll see how it goes!
Anybody else interested in doing a Geek Camp next summer? Something we could compare notes on over The Internet?

Date: 2007-08-09 12:14 am (UTC)And actually, I've ben thinking that a proper Geek Camp SHOULD be full of pre-geeked kids in order to pile on the Peer pressure nice an thick! I never wanted to learn to swim till that year I went to camp, after all.. EVERYBODY was doing it!
Now if we could just get that mentality working for us in a rousing D&D session...
