Well at least now I know that [livejournal.com profile] khristle's PC needs a PCI video card, not an AGP. So I have two very nice looking AGP video cards sitting on the table with no place to put them (will be going back to their rightful owners), and I'm now in need of a PCI video card.

Anybody got a spare PCI video Card we can have?

PC Recycle has very, VERY small ones (like, 4MB-to-8MB) for $10 each, but would that even work in a Windows XP machine? All she uses the computer for is Internet and Digital Photos. No gaming at all.

Any help is of course greatly appreciated :)

The regular PCI cards I have would be in the low-end range like that.

How old is her computer/motherboard? If it's on the newer side, it may be able to take PCI-X or PCI-Express cards, and then it'd be an easier find - I think I've got a PCI Express card @ work.

It currently has a PCI Express card in it, 128mb. So there's a difference? i thought the "Express" was just hyperbole, like an "Ultimate" Cheeseburger.

It's different. PCI is the old standard. PCI-X was an update with a wider data path & faster clock speed, but PCI cards could largely be used in PCI-X slots. PCI-Express is a major retooling of it all, intended to replace PCI-X and AGP cards, and is not backward compatible with anything.

I'll poke around @ work for the PCI-E card I think I have.

If that doesn't pan out, I believe you can get 32 - 64 meg pci video cards on newegg for a reasonable amount. Also, are you sure that machine doesn't have onboard video already? Or is it actually that old?

The list, if this link works: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010380048%201069609642&bop=And&Order=PRICE

The cheapest card:

Hopefully that helps a bit.

This is actually khristle - I forgot to sign out of his acct.

My computer did have an on board video card, but it NEVER worked right. I was missing the color red for quite some time after getting my new computer. Brian ended up installing the old vid. card out of my old computer onto my new one.

Ah. In that case, if you don't manage to freecycle one up, newegg may be the best way to go - especially since if you DO buy a 64 meg card since that's the market minimum, it'll probably last through this computer & you'd be able to use it in the next machine.

Although free out of someone's parts stash would definitely be better.

MY WIFE HAS BEEN POSING AS ME! I feel so VIOLATED!!!

So... *would* a 6-mb card work in a 2-year-old Compaq?

It would work... but it would look like crap. And she would want to use your computer for anything involving pictures of molly, because she'd look like a unit out of a starcraft game.

It would keep it going as an email-station for awhile longer, though.
