How would you feel if you received Bootleg DVD's for Christmas?

I don't mean some Street-Corner shaky-cam DVD's you bought from "some guy".

I mean a very nice, compact portfolio of Christmas Films with all the IMDB information printed out for you. Something that would have actually taken some time and some thought to come up with.

I'm torn. on the one side, I think it qualifies as a "Home Made" Christmas Gift. Like the year that one of my Cousins gave me a 6-hour video tape of Disney Channel (from back when Disney Channel was a pay-channel) with all the commercials edited out. That was pretty awesome!

On the other hand, it could be seen as something cheap and silly, like a Xerox copy of a Comic Book.

(Don't bother replying re: the moral and legal implications of making copies of DVD's, please).

I think it'd be cool, particularly if these films are ones that the recipent really wants, or the films are not available on DVD! And I can't really lecture on the moral/legal implications of copying DVDs, given that:

1. The main reason I have a video-store membership is to copy the movies I rent (though my dad is worse).

2. I just recently did two versions of image cleanup for a real vintage Jem shirt design, and made them available to the public in [livejournal.com profile] floral_hippo.

3. I will do nearly ANYTHING to get my greedy paws on the episodes that comprise "Jem and the Holograms" Season Three, Part Two. They were never released on DVD (damn you to hell, Sony!) and my collection is incomplete because of it.

Therefore, to lecture you would be hypocritical.

Perhaps you would like a JEM T-shirt design? Click here!

And when I can figure out this program, I can try to copy my Jem DVDs.

I don't know how picky you are about the quality, but you might check eBay. Before the official DVDs came out, I got a pretty decent copy of all the episodes on DVD-R from a seller there.

That would be pretty cool, actually.

Sadly, dvd's in their cases take up space & a binder thingie would have many movies in very compact manner. Also, like she said about stuff that's just not available on DVD. Also, I've seriously contemplated something similar with music for my mom for christmas... because for something like music, or movies, its not really the packaging that is the present, its the content...

That's EXACTLY it! The person I'm making this for has a HUGE BOX full of DVD's and VHS tapes that she only takes out at Christmas Time every year. The whole thing could be easily compacted in to a binder no larger than a photo album!

Okay, so it's definately a good idea. Thanks :)

I think the actual idea is awesome, although I personally don't like receiving Christmas themed things at Christmas, because they're immediately of no use for 11 months. You forget you own them by the time they're no longer ironic. I think if someone has no money for a huge gift but takes the time and effort to make something it's a very nice gesture.

It's the thought that counts. The fact you spent the time do make something for someone no matter what it is shows you thought of them while making the gift.

Having seen Riley watch the Spiderman & His Amazing Friends DVD set you made him about 38 times in a row over the last week, I'd say it would be well appreciated - especially if it's stuff that's hard/impossible to get in some other way.

I've never posted on your lj. Though we are on each others flists for awhile.
I think if presented nicely it could be a touching gift. Like a binder full of tv shows that you used to watch with someone when you were kids.
