The Disney Movie Rewards Program has made pretty much every rationalization I ever had for illegally downloading a movie a moot point now. All I have left is "It's not available on DVD" and/or "I like to steal things because I'm a bad man".
New DVD and Blu-Ray movies from Disney have a code in them. Take this code to their website and it works two-fold:
1) You get "Points" for the purchase that you can redeem for nifty little (or big) prizes... from free stuff (downloads) to awesome collectibles and all points in-between. But that's not what's going to make it hard for me to rationalize bootlegging...
2) Your purchase gives you unlimited access to a Digital Cloud copy of your movie! You can watch it streaming on your computer, mobile device, whatever... FOREVER! THEY GIVE YOU A DIGITAL BACK-UP THAT YOU CAN NEVER LOSE OR SCRATCH OR OTHERWISE MAKE UNPLAYABLE!!!
That... that's just incredible to me. Why hasn't the rest of Hollywood started doing this? This is *extremely* forward-thinking of Disney! I can hardly wait to start buying movies again instead of just rent-n-rip!

Date: 2011-07-14 08:29 pm (UTC)My uncle worked for Disney when I grew up. Which meant we were inundated with ALL THINGS DISNEY. Then my Mom was like, "Oh, hey, picked up this Grimm's fairy tales book for you." It was everything Disney had made but darker with beheadings and things dying every where. I immediately perked up thinking, man, there's not even any lame ass singing! Then I spent several more years being inundated with more Disney stuff while I took up reading mythology and other fun dark things just to watch Disney make it perky.
Actually, now that I've written that, maybe I am Lady Hitler. Shit.
If push came to shove though I like the older stuff better and Pixar. And the things that aren't remotely based off of fairy tales or mythology. Aristocats and Herbie to name a few. I LOVED Herbie when I was little.

A bit darker, a bit more self-aware... still has sappy songs but everybody who HAS seen it and dislikes Disney movies ends up liking this one :)

With all this said what I was curious about is what about people who have invested in a Disney library already? My brother and his wife have a TON of movies and I was thinking how bad it sucks that they don't have the codes. :(
Oh and when Netflix gets Tangled on Instant I'll watch.

Date: 2011-07-14 09:03 pm (UTC)Emperor's New Groove = YES! Excellent film! If you like that one, you may need to RedBox some Tangled action... just ignore the stupid lizard and love the rest of the movie (you'll know what I mean when you see it)
Existing movie libraries - they've got folks covered! As long as it's a movie that is in their database (only adding current and future releases) you can upload a pic of the movie and your receipt to have it added to your on-line back-up. They've been putting the Movie Rewards Codes in to the packaging for a few years now, so most DVD releases of the past several years are eligible :)
